The head of Ghana’s parliament has launched a campaign to have the country’s laws amended to permanently ban homosexuality in the country.
The speaker of parliament Professor Mike Oquaye who is also a pastor is vehemently opposed to same sex marriage and has described it as despicable act.
Ghana’s laws do not support gay rights but do not explicitly ban homosexuality. Leaders of Ghana have struggled to state the stance of the country on gay rights in a country that is largely religious.
Gays and Lesbians in Ghana have on several occasions been attacked for the sexuality making it challenging for human rights activists to protect them.
Starr FM in Ghana reported that the parliament speaker said homosexuality is against the country’s culture and cannot be accepted.
Professor Oquaye is quoted during a meeting with another pastor to have said that existing legislations are not clear on the illegality of the practice.
“It is unfortunate that people have become so liberal that they will want to liberalise Christianity…even priests are approving of homosexuality and allowing a man and a man [to] marry, a woman and a woman [to] marry and these are manifest abominations.” He said.
Mr. Oquaye further said that “The Parliament of Ghana will find its way clear in strengthening the laws to ban homosexuality as they exist. As for this, may God forbid that it becomes a Ghanaian culture”.
Most African countries frown on same sex marriage with harsh punishment for offenders.
