The President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has announced his concerns with the vote by member states of the African Union to readmit Morocco into their fold.
Mr. Mugabe, 93 said the decision shows that the AU and some African leaders lack an ideology.
Morocco was readmitted on Monday after leaving the organization in 1984 following the recognition of the independence of Western Sahara by the African Union.
This was approved at the 28th AU Summit in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. 39 heads of state out of 54 voted for the return of Morocco.
Morocco secured the needed votes despite strong opposition by countries in Southern Africa who support the independence of Western Sahara.
Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia and Algeria had wanted Morocco to give up its claim to the Western Sahara territory to be readmitted to the AU.
The Senegalese President Macky Sall said “Even if the question of Western Sahara remains a question being raised, one can continue to find solutions as a family. Admission has been made and the most important thing today is that Morocco is an integral member of the African Union”.
But Mr. Mugabe told state media in Zimbabwe that the lure of Morocco’s money won over principle.
According to President “We believe in rules, in the principles and we have wanted to see Morocco declare at least, that yes, we have given up the claim of occupation.
“I think its lack of ideology. They [the African leaders who backed Morocco] have not had the same revolutionary experience as all of us and there is too much reliance on their erstwhile colonizers.” He added.
