The army chief of the Gambia has stated that his soldiers are not going to fight troops coming from neighboring Senegal should they enter the country.
Ousman Badjie is quoted by the AFP news agency to have said that “We are not going to involve ourselves militarily, this is a political dispute,”
This means should the troops from the sub-regional bloc ECOWAS enter the Gaambia to force Yahya Jammeh out, the country’s army will not engage in any combat to protect Mr. Jammeh.
Mr. Jammeh’s tenure has expired but he has refused to step down claiming the elections he lost last year were flawed.
The Gambian army chief, Badjie further said “I am not going to involve my soldiers in a stupid fight. I love my men.”
Mr. Adama Barrow, who is president-elect is currently residing in Senegal and had alerted his followers that his inauguration will take place on Thursday although it is not certain where this swearing in will take place.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz in a last minute talks with Mr Jammeh said “I am now less pessimistic [that Mr Jammeh] will work on a peaceful solution that is in the best interest for everyone”.
The United Nation is also expected to make a statement on this political crisis later on Thursday.
