Officials of the Nigeria Police Force are reported to have raided the house of the wife of former president of the country, Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The PUNCH in Nigeria reported that Patience Jonathan’s house, was raided by operatives of the police on Wednesday, hoping to uncover huge foreign currencies allegedly being kept in the building.
According to the PUNCH the security personnel were tipped off about huge amount, believed to be stolen government money being kept in the building located at Igbeti Rock, Maitama, Abuja.
The police officials were however reported to have found no cash in the house after the operation.
A source told the local media outlet that the police did not know that the building belonged to Mrs. Jonathan until she identified herself as a former First Lady on the telephone.
The Punch quoted its source as saying “At the house, the security men said the house belonged to one Jaga, a Rivers State indigene, and the team leader was directed to call the owner. The security man gave the phone to the team leader and she identified herself as former First Lady.”
“She spoke in pidgin English and told the operatives to go and take whatever they kept in the house. The team leader advised her to send her lawyer and she did. The house was searched in the lawyer’s presence” the source added.
President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to tackle corruption in Nigeria and has already undertaken some steps to investigate former government officials perceived to have stolen state money.
