Local media outlets in Ghana’s capital Accra have projected that Ghana’s main opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo, has won the country’s presidential election.
According to local radio stations like Joy FM and Citi FM, Nana Addo won with an absolute majority over President John Mahama.
Joy FM’s website showed Akufo-Addo winning with 53 percent of the vote with Mahama on 45.15 percent, based on a count of 217 constituencies out of 275 in total. Citi FM gave Akufo-Addo 54.8 percent based on 190 constituencies.
Starr FM however projected Nana Addo winning with 54.13 percent with President Mahama on 44.18 percent based on results from 214 our of 275 constituencies.
The electoral commission is yet to release official results with many Ghanaians anxious for its declaration. Other opposition parties who contested the elections have congratulated Nana Addo.
This is the third time Nana Akufo-Addo, 72, is running for president after serving as attorney general and then as foreign minister in the New Patriotic Party government. He has asked his supporters to be calm.

President Mahama has in the last hours asked Ghanaians to be patient for the electoral commission to declare results.
