Presidential and parliamentary elections are due in Ghana on December 7, but voters are yet to witness a debate featuring the various presidential candidates together with the incumbent president John Mahama.
On Wednesday such a debate will take place but will not feature the leading opposition party’s candidate, Nana Akufo Addo.
The New Patriotic Party’s candidate has declined to participate in the debate being organized by the country’s National Commission for Civic Education and the state broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
Starr FM in Ghana reports that the opposition New Patriotic Party declined to take part in the debate because its candidate has what the local station said are “equally important issues” to deal with.
Incumbent John Mahama will debate six other candidates who are also contesting the elections.
The candidates will get the chance to further outline their policies to voters and convince them why they should be voted to become president.
A private policy think tank, The Institute of Economic Affairs has already organized a debate for three of the presidential candidates this month. The event was boycotted by the incumbent John Mahama and the opposition leader, Nana Akufo Addo.
