The head of communication for Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, Willy Nyamitwe has narrowly escaped an attempted assassination Monday night in the capital Bujumbura.

Details of the incident are not yet clear but a policeman, who is a member of Nyamitwe’s security team died during the attack.

“I praise the Living God for keeping my brother Willy Nyamitwe tonight as he survived another assassination attempt. To Him, all the glory!,” Alain-Aimé Nyamitwe, Burundi’s External Relations Minister and brother of William confirmed the attack with a tweet on Monday night.

Willy Nyamitwe himself confirmed on Tuesday morning that he is fine but saddened by the death of the policeman whom he called his best friend.

“I thank those who wished me a speedy recovery. I’m fine but saddened by the death of a best friend, the policeman Gasongo,” he tweeted.

Sporadic political violence has plagued Burundi since April 2015, when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would seek a third term in office amid significant opposition.

Hundreds of people have been killed and the United Nations is investigating reports of torture and rape.
