Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has made a passionate appeal to militants in the Niger Delta to stop destroying oil pipelines .
The Punch reported that the president made the appeal through his minister for Agriculture and rural development on Saturday in Yenagoa, the capital of the Bayelsa state.
The president wants people of the Niger delta to give peace a chance to support agricultural growth for sustainable economic development and wealth creation.
The president in the statement read by his minister said “I appeal to the people of the Niger Delta region to embrace peace and focus on agriculture for sustainable economic development and wealth creation. I urge you to take advantage of the huge potential in agriculture and stop the destruction of oil and gas pipelines, which only serve to destroy our ecosystem and economy.
President Buhari further stated in the statement that “The present administration is committed to doing everything possible to support the people of the Niger Delta to achieve their potential in agriculture, which is far more than its endowments in oil and gas.”
Last week a militant group in Nigeria called the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) claimed to have bombed oil pipelines in southern part of the country.
The group said it blew up three trunk lines carrying 300,000 barrels of oil a day to the Bonny export terminal of Dutch-British producer Shell in southern Bayelsa state.
