Hundreds of young people were injured in a stampede over job interview sessions in Malawi.

Health authorities in the country say the incident occurred in the northern city of Mzuzu.

According to local news reporting some 158 people received treatment for various injuries suffered in the stampede.

The young people had reported for the job interviews to gain placements into government institutions.

The government was hiring people as health workers for rural communities as health surveillance assistants (HSA).

There were tens of thousands of people who responded to this interview call, thronging centres in the capital, Lilongwe, and in the southern city of Blantyre apart from Mzuzu, where the stampede happened.

At all the centres there were no signs of adherence to their own covid-19 protocols.

Across Africa, millions of young Africans remain jobless and its always a struggle among them for limited job placements.
