Evacuation of people in Kenya’s flood-prone communities has started after the government said almost 200 deaths have been recorded.
Over one hundred thousand people have been displaced as a result of the floods and thousands of hectares of crops also swept away.
With experts warning of more rains in the coming weeks there are concerns hydroelectric dams in the country could burst their banks.
Kenya’s interior ministry said security teams are evacuating people in flood-prone regions to safer grounds.
Since the start of April, floods have killed nearly 200 people across Kenya, according to officials.
Minister Fred Matiang’i told journalists that evacuations are being done in the north-eastern, eastern and coastal regions.
He said “we have raised the alert level in the country in relation to the flooding situation and have given instructions to our security teams in North Eastern, Eastern and Coast regions to begin evacuation of high risk populations to safer grounds.”
