Ghanaian officials have launched search for six Nigeriens who fled mandatory quarantine over the coronavirus pandemic.

Local news outlet Joy FM reported that they escapees left the quarantine facility in Ghana’s Oti Region, south of the country.

These Nigeriens are part of some individuals arrested this month and prevented from crossing over to Togo.

They were placed in a facility to be observed by health officials but the officials visited the facility only to find out that the Nigeriens had escaped.

The Nigeriens reportedly left their belongings behind with officials believing they may be within the community.

Ghana has over the past one month recorded several instances of people placed under quarantine escaping including people confirmed to have been infected by the virus.

The country has lifted a three week lockdown placed on four major cities but other restrictions on public and social gatherings remain.

Ghana has recorded at least 1,279 cases of coronavirus with the Oti region where this latest escape from quarantine facility is being reported has confirming 13 of those Covid-19 cases.
