An aide to the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the third person to die of coronavirus in that country.

Jean-Joseph Mukendi wa Mulumba who was a human rights lawyer died from complications triggered by the Coronavirus.

He was acting head of President Félix Tshisekedi’s legal advisory council and got infected during his trip to France for a medical check-up.

Mr Mulumba was a key figure in DR Congo opposition politics and helped in the fight for human rights.

In the past he represented opposition politicians like Moïse Katumbi and those opposed former President Joseph Kabila.

DR Congo has confirmed 48 cases of Covid-19 and on Tuesday, President Tshisekedi announced the closure of the country’s borders.

He also announced that the capital, Kinshasa, where most of the cases have been reported, be isolated.

Africa has so far recorded over 2,000 cases of coronavirus across 43 countries with 64 deaths so far.
