Ghana’s former president, John Kufuor has joined calls for digital designs and innovations to be responsive to the dangers digital users face online.

According to the former President, “Technology is good and we can provide education about how to remain safe online at all times.

“It is important to also appreciate the fact that humans as we are, there are people who are more likely than others to be at risk of online abuse.”

Civil society group Child Online Africa has been pushing for safe and responsible use of the Digital space with special focus on children and young people.

The organization as part of its Digital Literacy Road show for the month of March has been engaging prominent persons to add their voices to making the digital ecosystem safer for users.

Officials of Child Online Africa paid a courtesy call on Former President Kufuor at his residence in Ghana’s capital, Accra to seek his support for safer usage of the digital tools.

He said that “to be able to deal with the overlapping and interdependent nuances, we as consumers should encourage and demand from design and innovation stages to have at the back of our minds our natural human frailties.”

He adds that such demands for safety by design is the only way “that we can guarantee some level of protection for the consumer.

The problem of technology must, to a large extent, be solved by technology itself.”

Former President Kufuor was Ghana’s President between 2001 and 2009.
