Dozens of angry caterers on Wednesday picketed at the residence of Ghana’s President in the capital, Accra over non-payment of arrears owed them by the government.
The caterers according to local news outlet Joy FM work under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).
Many of the caterers who are women besieged the residence of President Akufo-Addo in Nima, suburb of Accra hoping to force him to order the payment of their arrears.
Joy FM quotes one caterer as saying that “I brought my mattress and pillow. We are suffering.”
Some of the women blamed the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison for not dealing with their plight.
According to the women, they are unable to settle their debts to banks and suppliers after borrowing to pre-finance activities under the school feeding program.
“How can I be using my money to cook for other children when my children are starving. My payment has been delayed for one and a half years. They claim there was a mistake in the figures involving my payment,” one of the women told Joy FM.
