Nigeria’s department of State Services on Tuesday complied with court orders to release journalist Omoyele Sowore, from custody.
Omoyele was released a few hours after Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami said in a statement that he had issued a directive for the Sahara Reporters publisher to be freed.
Malami said his directive followed the decision by the President Muhammadu Buhari to comply with the court orders granting bail to the two men including Sowore.
The other person released from custody is Sambo Dasuki, a Nigerian Army colonel who has spent four years in detention.
Dasuki has been in detention since December 29, 2015 and had remained in custody in violation of series of court orders directing his release.
Omoyele Sowore was earlier this month re-arrested in a chaotic manner after securing a bail.
The former presidential candidate was detained since December 6 after his bail was upheld by a high court.
He was seen in a video that went viral being pinned to the floor during scuffles with state security agents at a court hearing.
Omoyele Sowore was first arrested in August this year after he led calls for a revolution.
But authorities say he was detained on charges of treason, money laundering and harassing the president.
Sowore has pleaded not guilty to those charges but has struggled to secure his release although the courts have ruled against his continued detention.
