African champion Gina Bass is sparking some excitement in The Gambia after winning gold medal in the 200 meters race in the all Africa games athletic championship which ended in Morocco.
Bass won the gold medal in style with a timing of 22.58 seconds, beating Ivorian Marie Josee Tallou who is regarded as Africa’s fastest.
Gina Bass broke her own national record with her winning time during the competition.
She was welcomed back home by fans and well-wishers with excitement.
Speaking to Africa Feeds upon her arrival at the Banjul international airport, Bass said she was proud to win the gold medal for the Gambia.
“I am very proud to represent my country and win a gold medal,this victory wouldn’t be possible without my teammates,” Bass said.
She becomes the first to win a gold medal in a major athletic championship for Gambia.
Bass said she will dedicated her victory to the Gambia National Olympic Committee which supported her career.
“I will dedicate my victory to the Gambia National Olympic Committee who help me in my career. They gave me scholarship to go and train abroad that is why I am successful today,” she told Africa Feeds.
Coming back from defeat
During the championship in Morocco, Gina also won a Silver medal in the 100metes race with a time of 11.13 seconds.

She lost that to Ivorian Marie Josee Tallou who clocked 11.10 seconds.
“When Tallou won in the 100 meters race by 3 seconds, I knew I will beat her in the 200 meters race because I knew I am faster than her in the long distance run,” she told Africa Feeds.
Gina will represent the Gambia in the Tokyo Olympics in Japan 2020 next summer.
In April this year she was named the best athlete of the year by the Sports Journalists Association of the Gambia
On the 18 May 2017, Gina won the gold medal in the 100 meters race in the Islamic game in Azerbaijan.
She represented the Gambia in the 2016 summer Olympics games that took place in Rio de Jenerio, Brazil as the country’s flag bearer.
