Women in a farming community in Ghana called Ntenanko in the country’s third largest region, Ashanti have declared a sex strike.
They have vowed not to engage in sexual activity with their husbands in order to avoid getting pregnant.
The women say there are no proper health facilities in the community for antenatal care.
They are hoping that their action will compel their husbands to demand the opening of the Community-based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compound facility built in 2015.
According to them the facility which was built to serve about 10 communities is rotting away while they travel several kilometers to access healthcare.
Facility in deplorable state
A local media outlet in Ghana’s Kumasi city reported that some fittings at the facility have been stolen and louver blades destroyed.
Weeds have also taken over the entire structure which was built under the previous government.
The women say giving birth has become a nightmare.
One of the aggrieved women was quoted by local radio station Pure FM as saying that if the women allow their husbands to have sex with them it will endanger their lives.
“We are afraid to get pregnant because of the pains we go through. Even how to get a vehicle” to get to the hospital is also a problem, one woman said.
Across the world, women declare sex strike to push through reforms and make their concerns known.
It is a significant move which symbolizes how important the issues are to women who embark on such actions.
