At least 27 people are feared dead after a boat they were traveling in capsized at Egbin, near Ijede, in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Local media reported that the boat was conveying passengers from Lekki but capsized while approaching Egbin.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority say rescue efforts are still ongoing.
But so far two bodies have been recovered by officials. Lagos State Police command has also confirmed the incident.
The Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said “About 20 passengers were on board when the boat capsized.
Rescue operation is ongoing, but two bodies have been recovered.” The incident happened n Saturday night according to reports.
Eyewitnesses also report of higher numbers on board the boat. Hogan Bassey, an eyewitness told local newspaper PUNCH that “A mishap happened last night around Egbin.
According to officials conducting the rescue operation, 18 passengers were on board but what I gathered from a reliable source was that 27 people were on board and only two bodies have been recovered.”
In 2017 nine people died in a boat accident in Lagos.
The nine were part of passengers who were traveling in a boat which capsized due to what the government said was due to overcrowding.
