Tunisia’s capital Tunis has been hit a twin suicide bomb attack.

Earlier on Thursday at least five people were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up targeting a police patrol.

A second suicide bomber hours later also blew himself up near a police station in al-Qarjani district in Tunis.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry said on Thursday that the second attack also resulted in at least four people sustaining injuries.

One police officer has been reported dead in the attacks, according to the Interior Ministry.

Heavily-armed police have now cordoned off the sites of the attacks. There is no clarity who is behind the attacks.

Last year, nine people were wounded after a 30-year old woman blew herself up in Tunis.

State officials said eight police were among the nine people who sustained injuries. The Interior Ministry called the incident a “terrorist explosion”.

Tunisia has in the past witnessed deadly militant attacks. In 2015, 21 people were killed during a hostage siege in the national museum, the Bardo in Tunis.

A gunman also killed 38 people on a resort beach and the country is just starting to restore its tourism sector after that attack.
