Unknown gunmen on Sunday killed one pastor and five congregants in an attack on a Protestant church in northern Burkina Faso.
Government spokesman Remy Fulgance Dandjinou confirmed the attack on Monday.
Burkina Faso in recent years has witnessed some deadly attacks carried out by jihadists.
Sunday’s attack on the church is however said to be the first of its kind in the West African nation.
According to local media reports, the gunmen carried out the attack on motorbikes at the end of Sunday’s service.
The pastor of the church and two of his sons and three other worshippers were those who were killed.
The attack was carried out in a small town of Silgadji near Djibo, the capital of Soum province.
Last week five teachers were killed in the eastern part of the country. That attack was also blamed on jihadists.
In January this year 46 people were also killed in an ethnic violence in a community called Yirgou.
