Popular opposition lawmaker in Uganda, Bobi Wine has called on citizens to stage mass protests against the police.

Bobi Wine’s call follows his arrest on Monday to prevent him from holding a concert in his Busabala neighbourhood in the capital Kampala.

The musician-turned-MP was arrested in a chaotic manner by the police and detained in his home town of Magere.

Police claimed he had disobeyed directives to cancel the planned concert. But on his way to a press conference he was removed from his car forcefully and taken to the police station.

The police had said they were unable to provide security for the concert which they fear could degenerate into protests.

Bobi Wine whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyihas is reported by the privately-owned Observer newspaper to have said it was high time actions were taken against the police and other state injustices meted out on Ugandans.

“We are encouraged by the people of Algeria who in the past weeks forced a dictator to resign, and the people of Sudan who through peaceful protests forced a powerful despot to give way,” the MP said.

This is not the first time Bobi Wine is suffering arrest and torture from the police.

Last year he was arrested and tortured in detention after his supporters were accused of attacking the convoy of President Yoweri Museveni.
