Mozambique has been hit by a powerful tropical storm, resulting in major destruction already in some areas.
In some towns billboards were seen blown off and electricity and telephone poles also knocked down.
The cyclone Idai was already expected to make a landfall in Mozambique after days of heavy rains led to deadly flooding.
Malawi has also been put on high alert and is expecting the cyclone to hit some of its major cities.
The cyclone has a wind speed of up to 224km/h and could make further deadly impact in the coming hours.
Meteorological officials in Mozambique say the cyclone is gathering strength over the Indian Ocean.
The city of Beira in Sofala Province could soon be hit massively again. Météo France is monitoring the French territories in the Indian Ocean.
It has said that cyclone Idai is “an extremely dangerous tropical cyclone” with potential “life-threatening” impact.
Deaths from floods
Already over 100 people have been killed by floods in Mozambique and neighboring Malawi due to heavy rains.
Mozambique cabinet spokesperson Ana Comoana told Aljazeera that the “government has decreed a red alert due to the continuing rains and the approach of the tropical cyclone Idai, expected to reach the country between Thursday to Friday”.
In 2000 Mozambique was hit by a deadly cyclone called Eline which killed some 350 people, displacing over 650,000.
Many cities at the time were left without access to water, sanitation or electricity due to the devastation.
