South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticized “bogus pastors” who claim to be able to resurrect the dead.
Ramaphosa’s criticisms follow reports of a South African pastor called Alph Lukau performing a stunt to resurrect a dead person.
Video of the said stunt went viral on social media. The pastor from Johannesburg was seen asking a man lying in a coffin to “rise up”.
The entire incident was ridiculed by South Africans who describe it as fake.
Some funeral directors in South Africa have already said they intend suing the aid pastor for manipulating them to into being involved.
Ramaphosa’s criticisms
Ramaphosa said while campaigning in Cape-Town that his government would however not regulate churches over the incident.
He said on Wednesday that doing so will attract a “backlash”.
The President further said that “Those who are doing things that are completely shocking, of trying to hoodwink the whole nation and saying that someone has been raised from the dead, it is actually bringing the name of the Lord – of God – and of churches into disrepute.
We do not want to interfere with people’s religious beliefs, but we should have a conversation about how we deal with these bogus pastors.”
Fake resurrection?
Meanwhile the Sowetan news site reports that saying the Lukau’s church has said that the said miracle was staged.
It said the church has backtracked on the resurrection claim saying the “dead” man was “already alive” before the stunt was performed.
There is already pressure on the “resurrection pastor” to bring more prominent people from the dead.
BBC reports that a leader of a charismatic church in South Africa has confronted the pastor for “bringing Christianity into disrepute”.
Pastor Paseka “Mboro” Motsoeneng was captured in a video by a BBC reporter saying “If it’s true that you resurrected a man, then let’s go to Mandela’s grave to do the same.”
