Uganda’s government says it will be rolling out its first electric cars for the mass market later this year.
The country failed in 2018 to release the Kiira EVS onto the market. That was due to challenges linked to funding and technology.
Uganda’s cabinet last year approved a $40 million facility for the plant in the next four years.
Reports suggest that some of the electric cars were test-driven to Kisoro in the west last week. The test-drive covered nearly 1,000km in total.
Kiira Motors Corporation, the company incorporated to lead Uganda’s leap into vehicle manufacturing, has the Kayoola solar-powered bus.
It also has the Kiira EV Smack, a hybrid electric vehicle and the fully electric Kiira EV POC as concept vehicles.
The company is also planning to expand its product line to include pick-ups, light and medium duty trucks and passenger vehicles.
Several meetings have been held according to media reports to bring in more partners for the project.
The Kiira EV is expected to reach full production capacity of 60,000 units per year by 2039.
