Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday took an early lead in presidential election results declared so far by the electoral commission.

His closest rival from the opposition PDP, Atiku Abubakar is however trailing him closely.

Atiku’s party is also rejecting the tallied results describing them as “incorrect and unacceptable”.

Elections took place in 36 states of Nigeria with ultimate winner required to gain at least 25% of the votes in two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states.

So far results from 12 states have been declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (INEC).

Declared states

Incumbent Buhari won in Osun, Kogi, Gombe, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Yobe and Kwara states.

PDP’s Atiku also won in Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Ebonyi, Ondo, Abia and Enugu states.

The chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus however told journalists in Abuja that the results are inaccurate.

Leading contenders

Nigeria had 73 registered candidates contesting the presidential election.

But the PDP and APC were the dominant parties and their candidates were the leading contenders.

Over 60 million voters took part in the process of choosing a president and new leaders for the national assembly.

President Muhammadu Buhari, 76,  and the former vice president and opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar, 72 were once close allies.

Buhari who took office on May 29, 2015 defeated the then sitting President Goodluck Jonathan.

He contested for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011 but only became successful and 2015.

Atiku Abubakar who is a former vice president of Nigeria is trying to prevent Buhari from securing a second term.
