A major military armoury in Ghana has been hit by explosions and fire on Wednesday morning.
Local media reports that loud explosions were heard at the armoury which is located at the base of the First Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to eyewitnesses that spoke to local station Joy FM a loud noise was heard followed by huge flames at the armoury base in Tema community near the capital Accra.
No deaths have been reported so far by officials. Africafeeds.com understands the armoury called “Base Ammunition Depot (BAD)” holds a large consignment of explosives.
A nursing mother told Joy FM that ”I stood by my window to witness everything. My husband rushed out to check because initially, we thought it was one our neighbour’s house on fire.
So he came back to confirm it was actually the arms depot…”.

Another resident was also quoted as saying that “At a point, it felt like there was an earthquake. I was terrified. I still am. My baby woke up scared as well. I was only inside waiting for my husband’s direction as to what to do next.”
Officials of Ghana Armed Forces have said they do not know what caused the fire.
The blaze was however brought under control after firefighters battled the fire for at least two hours.
