Egyptian officials say illegal smuggled artefact belonging to the country has been retrieved.
The artefact was returned, according to Egypt’s ministry of antiquities after it was displayed at an auction hall in London.
According director-general of Egypt’s ministry of antiquities, Shaaban Abdel Gawad, the archaeological item was earlier exhibited at the open museum of the ancient Temple of Karnak in the city of Luxor.
The announcement was made on the ministry’s Facebook page.
Egyptian officials said steps were taken to stop the sale of the artefact after discovery of the item on international auction websites.
Once the discovery was made moves were made to stop the sale of the item and withdraw the listing.
The artefact is a cartouche of King Amenhotep I. It was reportedly smuggled out Egypt. But officials don’t know how or when it was smuggled out.
Egyptian officials say British authorities helped to recover the artefact September last year.
