A prisoner in Thailand died on Tuesday while trying to escape from detention. He was reportedly electrocuted by high-voltage barbed wire, according to police.
Police say Wiwat Aksorsom, 32, broke cell with two other prisoners and tried to scale six-metre (20-ft) walls of his prison in southern Surat Thani province.
AFP reports that Aksorsom “accidentally touched the electrified barbed wire” resulting in his death instantly.
Top police officer in Thailand, Colonel Wanchai Palawan is quoted by the AFP as saying that “Prison officials found his body on the wall after he was electrocuted.”
The two other prisoners who tried escaping with Aksorsom avoided being electrocuted but were all re-arrested hours later by police.
Wanchai said the prisoners said “they are homesick.” These prisoners were jailed for drug offences.
Wiwat Aksorsom was on remand awaiting prosecution after his arrest while in possession of 38 methamphetamine tablets.
Many prison facilities in Thailand are well equipped with high-voltage electrical fencing to punish prisoners attempting to escape.
