Uganda has expressed a desire to establish a chemical academy. The Ugandan government is now lobbying for the support of the State Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention in an effort to get the academy established.

Uganda’s Permanent Secretary Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Pius Bigirimana in pitching the idea to the Convention said the academy will elevate the Africa technical support programme.

It will also lead to an exchange of knowledge, provision of equipment and related technologies to ensure local and regional efficiency in handling chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear-related affairs says the government.

“My delegation, therefore, requests for support from State Parties to realise the idea of the academy and centre of excellence established in Uganda,” said Bigirimana last week during the Convention’s conference at The Hague, Netherlands.

Uganda was the host of the regional operational training under the Convention which took place from October 24 to November 1.

Thirty-six participants from Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda were trained as experts in conducting downward training and first responders to toxic chemical emergencies in the region.

Uganda ratified the chemical weapons convention in 2001, after which, the Gender Ministry was appointed national authority for domestication of the convention.
