The Vatican on Tuesday said that Pope Francis has accepted the invitation from Morocco’s monarch King Mohammed VI to visit the country.
The Pope will be visiting the north African country next year between March 30 and 31, stopping in Rabat and Casablanca.
The Vatican did not give further details about the trip. But the two-day trip should afford the Pope the opportunity to discuss issues relating to African migrants.
Morocco has become a major transit route for many African migrants looking to reach Europe.
Already Pope Francis is expected to visit Madagascar next year.
Details of when the visit would take place are scanty but a Vatican spokesman said preparations were “well under way”.
The Pope had said this year that Madagascar was among the countries he wanted to visit in 2019.
Vatican sources said the trip would be part of a tour of several African countries.
