Cameroon’s 85 year old President, Paul Biya has been sworn in for his seventh term.
At an inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, Mr. Biya pledged to uphold the “integrity” and “unity” of his country.
He was declared winner of the country’s Presidential election held last month. Biya won with 71 percent of the vote.
President Biya will now extend his extend his 36-year rule and cement his place among Africa’s longest serving leaders.
He will end his tenure at the age of 92. Biya came into power in 1982 when his predecessor then retired.
Biya became president after serving as prime minister for seven years. President Biya supervised over the scraping of term limits from the Cameroon constitution in 2008.
President is however presiding over chaos in the English speaking regions of Cameroon. Separatists in those regions have been fighting for independence.
They have clashed with soldiers resulting in violence, deaths and displacements.
On Monday, some of these separatists kidnapped over 80 students. The gunmen say the students will be released at the end of the struggle.
Camerooneans in English speaking regions say the French-dominated speaking country has discriminated against them for years.
