Lecturers at one of Ghana’s top universities, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have declared an indefinite strike.
The lecturers are protesting a decision by the government to dissolve the university’s governing board.
The board of the university was dissolved following students violent protest leading to the closure of the institution.
Local media reports that the government has constituted an interim board to oversee the reopening of the university within the next 14 days.
Students on Monday staged a protest that turned violence with the destruction of school property. The students were unhappy with what they call police brutalities triggered by the university management.
“We do not believe that the action taken by Government is the best way to resolve the issue as it frowns on the autonomy of the University and smacks of political interference,” the statement from the lecturers said.
The lecturers say other staff of the university will join them to stage a protest on Monday over government’s action.
