Health ministry officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say new Ebola cases have been confirmed in the eastern part of the country.
Officials on Saturday said five new cases of the deadly virus have been confirmed. They blamed the latest situation on the ongoing violence hindering response efforts.
The ministry in a statement said the new cases were detected in Beni, where rebel activities have affected response efforts.
“The town of Beni has become the new focus point of the disease, registering the highest percentage of cases reported in recent weeks following community resistance of certain families,” the statement said.
Last month, Health workers suspended their work in the city of Beni due to violent attack by rebels. They only resumed work last week.
Last week residents in one of the Congolese cities attacked health workers helping to provide care for Ebola patients.
The residents of the city of Butembo rejected claims of the existence of the Ebola virus. They angrily attacked the health workers rejecting their support.
Some of the residents were reported to have thrown rocks at the car carrying the health workers. Four workers from the Red Cross were injured in the process.
Hundreds of people have been infected with the deadly Ebola and health officials have been working hard to contain the spread.
Over 100 people have also died from the current outbreak as well.
