A police officer reported to be drunk has shot dead two of his colleagues in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

State media Fana Broadcasting Corporation reported the incident on Thursday. The drunk police officer was also shot dead in the process.

Fana reported that Federal Police Commissioner Zeynu Jemal confirmed the incident. He was quoted as saying that “The attacker was intoxicated with alcohol at the time”.

Calm has since returned to the central district of Bole where the shootout occurred. Roads in the area were earlier blocked.

This latest incident is happening days after violence in western Ethiopia forced thousands to flee their homes. Some 44 people are reported to have died in the ethnic violence.

The violence in the Benishangul-Gumuz region erupted after some local officials were killed during a visit to neighbouring Oromiya region.

There was a reprisal attack on Oromos living in Benishangul-Gumuz after Friday’s incident forcing many to flee. At least 28 people were killed in another violence in September in the capital, Addis Ababa.

UN says almost one million people have been displaced by violence in southern Ethiopia since April. The latest violence is seen as a setback for Ethiopia’s Prime minister, Abiy Ahmed who promised reforms.
