Ethiopian officials say over 70,000 people have fled their homes in the western part of the country following the eruption of violence last Friday.
UN officials said on Tuesday that some 44 people are also reported to have died in the ethnic violence.
The violence in the Benishangul-Gumuz region erupted after some local officials were killed during a visit to neighbouring Oromiya region.
There was a reprisal attack on Oromos living in Benishangul-Gumuz after Friday’s incident forcing many to flee.
At least 28 people were killed in another violence in September in the capital, Addis Ababa.
UN says almost one million people have been displaced by violence in southern Ethiopia since April.
The latest violence is seen as a setback for Ethiopia’s Prime minister, Abiy Ahmed who promised reforms.
Ahmed is himself an Oromo and since becoming prime minister has undertaken reforms aimed at restoring peace to parts of the country.
He still has a major challenge in ensuring bringing a closure to the violence in parts of the country.
