Sudanese officials say an outbreak of a strange disease related to mosquitoes has hit parts of the country. Thousands of people in eastern Sudan have been infecting with the spread increasing.
The outbreak of Chikungunya has been recorded in Kassala, Gedarif and the capital, Khartoum.
There have been reports of several deaths but officials say they are yet to confirm any deaths.
Chikungunya which is a mosquito-borne viral disease has symptoms, of high fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain and rash.
The disease is very fatal and so far has no treatments or vaccines.
An official in Sudan’s Kassala state, Magzoub Abou Moussa says his region needs more help to combat the disease.
He is quoted by Reuters as saying that “So far official statistics say that about 11,000 people were infected and there haven’t been any documented cases of death because of the Chikungunya fever.”
Sudan’s largest opposition party, National Umma Party in a statement said “We call on civil society organizations and the World Health Organization to help the people of Kassala.”
Sudan’s government has come under criticisms for the outbreak. Activists are calling for better response.
