Officials in Tanzania say more than 136 people have so far been killed after a ferry capsized on Lake Victoria on Thursday.
Rescue efforts are continuing on Friday as hundreds are reported still missing following the disaster.
Tanzanian police fear the death toll could rise due to the large number of people the ferry was carrying. Over 400 people were on the ferry.
A regional police commander told Reuters that Thirty-seven people had been rescued from the sea, while the confirmed death toll has risen to almost 100.
Local media reports that the MV Nyerere ferry capsized near the shore between the islands of Ukora and Bugolora.
The regional official, Adam Malima told reporters that “We pray to God to give us hope in such an accident
“We pray to God to give us hope that there has not been a high death toll.”
Lake Victoria, which is Africa’s largest lake has in the past recorded accidents. In 1996 over 800 people died in a similar disaster.
