Angolan officials say five people were killed during a stampede in a stadium after a football match over the weekend.
The country’s sports ministry said on Monday that seven others also sustained injuries in the stampede after an African Champions League soccer match in the capital Luanda.
Local media reports that the stampeded occurred when soccer fans tried rushing out of the stadium after the game.
The match was between Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Eye witnesses told local media that the stampede happened because the gates to the Estádio 11 de Novembro stadium were shut after the match.
Scores of the fans tried rushing out when police opened the gates, leading to the stampede.
In statement the Angola’s sports ministry said the deaths injuries were regrettable. Angola’s sports watchdog says it will investigate the incident.
In 2017 there was a similar stampede at a stadium in Uige, a city in northern Angola. At least 17 people died and dozens were injured.
Last week, one person was killed in a stampede in Madagascar. 37 others were also injured in the stampede at a football stadium in the capital Antananarivo.
