Tanzania’s parliament has banned female lawmakers from wearing artificial nails and eyelashes.
Local media The Citizen reports that any female MP that flouts this would be prevented from the lawmaking chamber.
The Speaker of Tanzania’s Parliament, Job Ndugai made the announcement. Ndugai defended the ban saying artificial nails and eyelashes have health implications.
The country’s deputy health minister Faustine Ndugulile had raised concerns about wearing fake nails and eye lashes.
Ndugulile said there were health risks posed by wearing them, prompting the parliament speaker to announce the ban.
The ban also applies to women visiting Tanzania’s parliament house.
The house speaker also made announcement of other bans. MPs and visitors are not allowed to wear short dresses and jeans to parliament.
