In most African countries giving birth is considered important and couples without a child suffer humiliation.

Child birth is therefore crucial for many families and communities. But increasingly some couples struggle to take care of their children because of lack of resources.

Even some countries lack resources to provide adequate social amenities for citizens. There have been debates about birth control in some African countries in order to deal with the situation.

Family planning is becoming an essential program in some countries to encourage couples to give birth to children they are prepared to cater for.

Tanzania’s President John Magufuli is however against family planning and says it has led to decline in population elsewhere.

Birth control is Laziness

He is urging couples to keep reproducing and is quoted as saying that only “lazy people” opt for birth control.

Mr. Magufuli told a rally in rural Mearu district in eastern Tanzania that family planning has caused workforce crisis in Europe.

Local media The Citizen quotes him as saying that “Those going for family planning are lazy. They are afraid they will not be able to feed their children.”

“They do not want to work hard to feed a large family. And that is why they opt for birth control and end up with one or two children” he adds.

The Tanzanian leader known for making controversial comments said “I have travelled to Europe and elsewhere and I have seen the side-effects of birth control. In some countries, they are now struggling with declining population growth.”

This year Magufuli asked Tanzanian men to marry two or more women to reduce the rate of prostitution among Women.

Magufuli told a gathering of men that unmarried women are resorting to adultery due to ‘lack of men to marry.’

“I am not forcing you, but just encouraging you to marry two or more wives to reduce on women staying without husbands”, Magufuli said.
