At least 19 people were killed in a plane crash in South Sudan on Sunday. The small aircraft was carrying passengers from capital Juba to the city of Yirol.
The plane crashed by a river with eyewitnesses saying bodies were recovered from the water.
In all 22 people were on board the flight at the time of departure from the Juba International Airport, according to officials.
AFP reports that the victims include the pilot and co-pilot, a staff member of the Red Cross and an Anglican bishop.
There were three children among the 22 passengers, a source told Reuters. Sudan’s information Minister Taban Abel told Reuters that “The number (of dead) has reached 19.”
Abel also revealed that among those killed in the crash were Ugandan and Ethiopian citizens. Among those who survived the crash was an Italian doctor working with a charity, the minister said.
This is not the first time South Sudan is recording such a plane crash. In 2017 four passengers were injured after a plan crashed due to bad weather.
In 2015, dozens of people were also killed when a cargo plane with passengers on board crashed after taking off from the airport in Juba.
