The vocal Ugandan lawmaker, Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine has given a chilling account of how Ugandan soldiers brutalized him.
The MP who has traveled to the United States for medical treatment fell seriously sick and was unable to walk shortly after he was arrested last month.
The pop star turned MP was arrested together with several others for allegedly playing a role in an attack on the country’s President, Yoweri Museveni.
Museveni’s convoy was reportedly attacked while returning from a campaign rally last month. After spending days in detention, Bobi Wine’s lawyers said he was tortured rendering him seriously sick.
Bobi Wine who is now suffering from Kidney problem because of the brutalities on Monday gave a vivid account of what happened to him.
Account of ordeal
In a Facebook post he said “They beat me, punched me, and kicked me with their boots. No part of my body was spared. They hit my eyes, mouth and nose. They hit my elbows and my knees. Those guys are heartless!”
Bobi Wine says soldiers beat up several others but he was helpless in helping them, something he says “haunts” him.
“As they dragged me out of the room, they continued to hit me from all sides. After some time, I could almost no longer feel the pain. I could only hear what they were doing from a far. My cries and pleas went unheeded.
The things they were speaking to me all this while, I cannot reproduce here. Up to now, I cannot understand how these soldiers who I probably had never met before in person could hate me so much” Bobi Wine wrote.
The Ugandan MP said the soldiers “pulled my manhood and squeezed my testicles while punching me with objects I didn’t see.”
Stopped from traveling
Last week Bobi Wine was stopped from flying out of the country to seek medical treatment abroad. Police arrested him at Kampala’s international airport.
This sparked protests in Kampala on Friday and police finally cleared him to fly out of the country for specialised treatment.
Bobi Wine wrote on Facebook that “My next communication will be a vote of thanks to the world for the overwhelming support and comradeship. I will also talk about what I think we must do together to continue this struggle for liberty and freedom.”
The Musician MP
Robert Kyagulanyi is a Ugandan celebrated Afrobeats star. He began his music career in the early 2000s and has been singing projecting various issues of national concern.
He has produced songs on issues such as freedom of speech and personal hygiene.
Bobi Wine was elected to parliament as an independent in a by-election in 2017 in Kyadondo East, central Uganda.
He calls himself the “ghetto president” since he stands up for the rights of the underprivileged.
