Somalia is one of Africa’s poorest nations and standard of living is very low.
This is compounded by the high level of insecurity in parts of the country due to deadly attacks by militants.
The high rate of poverty among some families has made them vulnerable to exploitation by so called tourists that visit the country.
Young women are being sexually exploited by men either visiting or returning after traveling abroad.
Channel 4 News reports that many of the women being exploited “are refugees who are lured by the offer of a better life abroad.”
“They often go through a fake wedding ceremony. The women are later abandoned as the men return to their families in the West,” the network reported.
It referred to the practice as “vacation marriage.”
