Four Nigerian policemen have been killed in an ambush on Saturday in Kaduna State.

They were killed by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, local media reports.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that six of the kidnappers were however killed in the exchange of gunfire.

A senior police officer, Abba Kyari, confirmed the attack to local media. He said the gunmen ambushed the police officers during an operation.

The operation by the police officers was a follow up to the kidnapping of a religious leader in Kaduna.

Kyari is quoted as saying that “operatives arrested two of the kidnappers in a remote settlement inside Rigasa Forest in Kaduna State.

“As the team was coming out of the bush with the arrested kidnappers, other gang-members hiding inside the bush ambushed the team and opened fire which resulted to the death of four operatives.”

Kyari also said six of the Kidnappers also died during the gun-battle.

Nigeria’s government continue to battle militants who often launch attacks on civilians and security forces.

Activities of kidnappers are also often reported in Nigeria with some solely for ransom purposes.
