At least 20 prisoners in Gambia have escaped from detention, according to local media reports.
APA reports that the jail break which occurred on Thursday night into Friday morning is the biggest in the country’s history.
The inmates escaped from the country’s second prominent prison called the Jeshwang Prisons, outside the capital Banjul.
Most of the escapees came from the remand wing of the detention center.
The African Press Agency reports that a commissioner of prisons said close to two dozen prisoners are now known to be at large.
Four prison officers who were on duty at the time of jailbreak have been arrested.
Gambian officials have now launched a manhunt for the jail-breakers hoping to re-arrest them.
The same prison also recorded a jailbreak a few weeks ago with a number of those escapees still at large.
Gambian prisons are still in terrible conditions as many of them are yet to received significant renovation.
Over crowding and unhealthy conditions continue to prevail in these detention centers.
