The Presidential election in Mali is increasingly facing a potential run-off.

The main opposition party in Mali on Monday revealed that latest results point to a run-off. It said the run-off will be between it’s candidate Soumaila Cisse and President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The country’s electoral commission is however yet to declare final results. The elections were held amid on Sunday suspected Islamist attacks.

Cisse’s campaign manager, Tiebele Drame, told journalists at the party’s headquarters in Bamako, the capital that the election was heading to a run-off.

“The law forbids the proclamation of results by anyone except the Ministry of Territorial Administration,” Drame said.

He added that “However, I can tell you that we are going to a second round between Soumaila Cisse and Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.”

Meanwhile President Keita’s spokesman says the president was in the lead according to provisional vote count. He added that a run-off was possible.

Mahamadou Camara said, “According to our tally, IBK has come substantially ahead,” referring to President Keita’s chances.

Voting did not take place in some 700 polling stations due to disruptions from armed groups.

Eight million voters were expected to cast their ballot.
