Mother of former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh is reported dead.

Hajia Asombi Bojang died on July 28 in Equatorial Guinea where her son is in exile.

The Adama Barrow led government has sent its condolences to the former leader’s family.

In a statement the government said, “Following news of the demise of Aja Asombi Bojang, mother of former President, Yahya Jammeh, His Excellency Adama Barrow on behalf of the people of the Republic of The Gambia, the first family and on his own behalf expresses his condolences to the former Head of State and his family.”

The statement says, “President Barrow prays for Allah to grant her eternal peace.”

She is expected to be buried according to the Islamic tradition but there are no indications she will be brought to the Gambia for burial.

Local media reports that Jammeh’s mother joined him in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea last year.

Jammeh was forced out of power after the 2016 presidential elections which he lost to Adama Barrow.

He has been staying in exile since 2017, a deal that was agreed on with the help of ECOWAS leaders.

Yahya Jammeh ruled Gambia for decades after seizing power in a coup.
