A Nigerian University has banned students with tattoos.
Officials at the Akwa Ibom University say students with tattoos are not allowed into the institution.
Prospective students who apply for admission are also denied on the bases of having tattoos on their bodies.
The Vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Eno James Ibanga, made the announcement in an interview with local media.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the University carries out body inspection of its students thoroughly before admitting them.
The University has made it public that one of the criteria for admission is the no-tattoo policy.
In January this year, Ghana also banned its citizens with tattoos from securing jobs in the country’s immigration service.
Citizens with dreadlocks, bleached skin and stretch marks were also disqualified for what the country considers as inappropriate.
Africans with dreadlocks and tattoos are still not largely welcomed in many societies.
Such persons are usually considered to be rowdy and uncultured. Tattoos are still considered foreign in Africa.
