The US government has declare the Kenyan group, Al-Hijra as a terrorist organisations.

The group is the Kenyan-based wing of militant group Al-Shabaab.

The US statement department on Thursday said Al-Hijra is now on its list of terrorist organizations.

“Terrorism designations expose and isolate organisations and individuals, and deny them access to the US financial system,” the State Department said.

It also said the designation “can assist the law enforcement activities of US agencies and other governments.”

The State Department says it is extending also classifying al-Shabaab as a global terrorist organisation after five-year review of it’s operations.

Al-Hijra according to the US government was formed in Nairobi in 2008.

The state department’s statement said Al-Hijra “consists primarily of Kenyan and Somali followers of Al-Shabaab in East Africa”.

Al-Shabaab has wrecked havoc across the East African region. It is believed it;s Kenyan affiliate, Al-Hijra helped to carry out some attacks in recent years.

The Westgate Mall massacre in 2013 and the attack on Garissa University College in 2015 are among those officials suspect.
