A Nigerian military base in the northeastern part of the country has been attacked by Boko Haram militants.
The militants reportedly wrecked havoc in the attack following hours of exchange of gunfire between them and the soldiers.
Sunday’s attack according to local media is the second in days after a similar attack on Saturday.
AFP reports that the militants on Saturday evening invaded a base holding hundreds of soldiers in Yobe state.
“Boko Haram terrorists attacked troops of the 81 Division Forward Brigade at Jilli village in Geidam district.
The terrorists came in huge numbers around 7:30 pm (1830 GMT) and overran the base after a fierce battle that lasted till 9:10 pm,” a military source told the AFP.
The military source further said “We don’t know if there were any casualties among the troops. That will be known later”.
The base that suffered the attack is new, according to the AFP and the troops had recently arrived from Lagos.
On Friday Boko Haram fighters ambushed a military convoy in neighbouring Borno state. 23 soldiers were said to have gone missing after the ambush.
Boko Haram has been wrecking havoc across Nigeria and other neighboring West African nations.
Millions have been displaced and hundreds killed in the group’s insurgencies. Nigeria’s government is yet to win the battle against the group.
